Standard 9: Leadership and Collaboration

means to me...

Interpersonal Relationships

An effective leaderships within the classroom begins with healthy and productive interpersonal relationships between teachers and students.  Teachers should allow their students experiences and opinions into the classroom. Students will look forward to school and students will become intrinsically motivated.

Collaboration

Respect

To build positive relationships requires good communication.  Communicating and collaborating frequently with students, parents, colleagues, and other members of the school and community allows me to better promote student growth and learning.  I meet on a consistent basis with colleagues to plan lessons and units and to discuss strategies and skills.  I speak with parents on a daily basis to discuss their child's growth, emotions, and academics.  I also speak frequently with paraprofessionals, counselors, after-school directors, and administration to discuss student behavior, academics, and growth.  Whenever I communicate about a student, my main focus is to celebrate accomplishments and to positively promote their growth and learning.

Respect can be earned between students and teachers by taking time to have interpersonal communication within the class.  Students that feel that their experiences and opinions matter in the classroom will help the teacher with delivering relevant instruction.  Students will feel safe and comfortable in the classroom which will allow students to a better capacity to learn.  Including students opinions and  funds-of-knowledge in curriculum will help students retain new information and reflect on lessons.
