Standard 2: Learning Differences

means to me...

Show Me

I design and adapt lessons to meet the diverse needs of students.  I create ways for students to demonstrate learning in different ways.  At Edison Elementary I would differentiate instruction based on individual learner needs.  The use of manipulatives, small dry erase boards, and small groups were just a few ways that I could meet learner differences.

ZPD to ZAD

Funds-of-Knowledge

ZAD (Zone of Actual Development) is what a student can accomplish with out help.  These are learned skills and qualities that have been developed in the students life.  ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) is just beyond what a student can accomplish alone.  I design instruction to build a students' zone of actual development.  Knowing students' prior knowledge and experiences allows me to plan lessons that are culturally relevant and interesting, yet challenging enough to gain new skills and experiences.

It is important to integrate students' culture and background knowledge in curriculum for instruction to be more effective.  I like to assess my students' funds-of-knowledge through "About Me" papers and spending time talking with them at recess or lunch.  Funds-of-Knowledge were essential to my work at Edison Elementary.  I had many kids that said they were bored and did not like school.  I took the time to get to know them personally and find their interests.  I was able to get a few students books that interested them enough to enjoy leisure reading.
